Simple Swaps: 5 Health Goals for the New Year

Tired of setting New Year’s resolutions that are difficult, time consuming and frustrating when you “fall off the wagon?”

Set an attainable resolution this year with these five simple health goals anyone can take on but that can make a big impact on your health and wellness in 2025.

Switch Up Your Drinks

The CDC recommends getting enough water every day to stay hydrated and feel your best, although the right amount depends on your age, health status and activity level. This can help avoid dehydration and other health concerns. Stick with drinks that do not have any added sugar, including water (plain or sparkling), plain coffee or tea and milk. It’s also important to limit your intake of alcohol or abstain entirely.

While changing your drinking habits might not feel as exciting as joining an expensive gym or training for a big race, these small health goals can make a huge difference in how you feel.

Get Moving – In A Way You Enjoy

Getting exercise is important for your health goals but shouldn’t feel like a chore. To get moving (and stay moving) this year, find fun ways to fit activity into your week. You could go for a walk with friends, have a dance party, work outside in the garden, play pickleball, sign up to walk a local 5K, play tag with your kids or take your pet to a new dog park.

The best kind of exercise to start with is the kind that:

  • Fits your activity level and abilities, and
  • Is FUN for you, because this means you’ll stick with it after January.

Try New Recipe

Overwhelmed by the idea of eating healthier? Instead of reworking your diet, start by adding healthy additions to your regular routine. When it doubt, eat the rainbow. Different colored fruits and vegetables contain a variety of nutrients, so the more colors you get, the more nutrients you get.

Consider adding a few new fruits and vegetables to your plate each week. Find recipes on Pinterest and find creative ways to incorporate new whole food ingredients. You just might find a new favorite dish.

Hit Pause on That Next Episode

Did your winter holiday season include a few too many binge watches or Christmas movies? Too much time spent on screens, especially before bed, can be disruptive to your sleep. That’s because the blue light emitted by screens can disrupt your body’s natural rhythms.

To avoid this issue, add staying away from screens an hour or so before bed to your health goals this year. Instead of watching that last episode of your favorite show, consider reading a book (some e-readers do not emit blue light) and if you must use a device, wear blue-light blocking glasses.

Make Time for Fun

Stress can have a negative impact on your short and long- term health. That’s why making time for fun is an important addition to this list of health goals. To help, identify sources of stress, make sure you are getting enough rest and build time into your schedule for things you enjoy.

Spend time with friends, pursue a hobby, attend a concert, try a new recipe, play a board game or write in a journal.  These positive boosts to your mood will help you feel better physically, mentally and spiritually.

Start 2025 with Simple Health Goals

These simple lifestyle changes are easy ways to be a healthier, and happier, version of yourself in 2025. When setting your health goals, don’t forget to schedule your annual appointment with your primary care provider.
